Cambodian Money (Riel)
US DOLLARS
While the official currency of Cambodia is the Riel, the US Dollar
is king in this country. In fact, you will find that in Cambodia
vendors use dollars as a base currency, and use their own currency
instead of US cents. The exchange rate is a rough 4000 Riels to
1 USD. In other words, if an item has a list price of 2.50 USD, then you
will need to pay 2 dollars and 2000 Riels.
ATMs in the country dispense US Dollars, so you will only get Riels as
change in any monetary transaction. I recommend you get rid of
these as soon as possible, because you will not be able to change them
into US Dollars outside of the country.
WITHDRAWING MONEY
As far as WHERE to get money, make sure to follow our
money exchange travel tip
and to get your cash out of an ATM. You can find several ATMs
in Siem Reap near Pub Street.
TIPPING
See our Tipping Guide.
CASH OR CREDIT
Like most places in SE Asia, cash is far and away the preferred (and
in many cases only) way to pay for goods and services. The one
exception to this policy is at hotels, which do
accept credit cards.
